Maybe we could do something involving photos or videos of us having a "stay-cation" while Ze is away on his vacation. Look for some unique and fun ways to chase that happy in our own towns. Might be a good way to get to know each other too. Whadaya think?

Great idea! I'm in!

I am not too bad on the piano, have a ridiculous amount of recording options (microphones etc.) and own Apple's Logic Studio. So I might be able to produce some music.

Any closer ideas on which direction this is supposed to take? Should I take Ze's voice and "autotune" a song from it? Should we try to sing it ourselves?

Uh, I just realized that there is music playing in the "Invocations" video in the background for most of the time. Might be hard to get out, but not impossible...

point though, what do you guys think about vocals?

should we put some lyrics together, sing/speak the phrases from the video, or just stick to backgroundy type music so there're no words to sync up?

Since we love to take pictures and to show Ze all the places we're from, I propose a picture form of the Invocation.

There
are 598 words that break down into a little over 50 phrases to the
invocation. Between a bunch of us, I think we can do this. Pick your
favorite phrase (don't be greedy) and take pictures of each one. Team
up! It can be on a piece of paper or written in the sky, but we need every word to have an accompanying picture.

and pick a phrase by ticking it off the list. Once you've done that and
taken your picture, send it here: InvocationPictures@gmail.com with
your words in the title.

When all the words are submitted, they
will be put into a video with, hopefully, Ze's voice from the invocation
reading them out. Pictures need to be in by Friday night (July 27) The
video will be done by July 29th at midnight...I hope. Check back for a
preview.

@saera Do you have something to record with? A microphone or pick-up for your instruments? A violin could sound awesome!

I can play guitar, piano, drums/percussion and (if no one else has a better way) provide a bass from my E-piano... But I lack melody instruments, so you fit right in.

I could try tomorrow to extract the "pure" speech from Ze's video, without the background music. That would be auto-tunable into a song, the current version isn't...

It's midnight here right now, so I guess I'll see what you guys think by tomorrow or if you are going any other direction.

I'm not great at drawing, but I'll do what I can. I have a video camera though, and some pretty good software for video editing and music... So I'll gladly help with any technical issues that arise.

@floh, yes, I've got a yeti mic, it's pretty fantastic ^.^

if you are able to isolate ze's voice we could use that for the focal point and build everything else around it.

strings are just as good at being in the background as the foreground (take coldplay and red for instance haha)

Maybe I'm thinking back to The Show too much, but how about a script for a show, like Fabuloso Friday? Or we could make our own show, write a script and have various people record segments of it.

@saera Great! I actually have some time tomorrow evening and on Sunday. So I hope I'll have something to send you by Sunday evening. I don't know where you are from, but that may actually be around noon for you. That will give you an idea of what I'm going for (not that I have that idea yet...), and you can think of some nice melodies and additions while I tweak the song a little more.

I'm hoping to have in done by the middle of next week to give the editors something to work with...

@LTJPunkass I wasn't around for "The show", but my first goto-idea was also to make a show of our own. That's very hard to organize on a forum though... You have to agree on a subject and then can't really parallelize the scripting, which is the most work. Filming and editing would surely be unproblematic, so if you have a great idea or get some people to write a script, I would do my part in it.

I still like the idea of adapting the "Invocations" video and am gonna throw myself at the music. Hehe, haven't done that in a while...

I just played around with the sound from the "Invocations" video. And let's just say: Isolating Ze's voice is a real challenge... I phase-inverted and added both channels, which basically only leaves the sound that is in the very center of the mix, every instrument shifted to the left or the right will cancel out. That's how some programs can do "Karaoke" versions of songs, just in reverse. In addition, I played a little with an equalizer to get rid of some of the very present notes in the background.

Well, let's just say this track was not made to be seperated. You can listen to the result here. Yes, the music is a little more in the background, but it is still so noticeable that I wouldn't dare to make this into a song.

If we want to stick to the "Invocations" video (almost all others don't have music in the background), I see three options:

1. We take the original soundtrack and just add our drawings
2. I record a complete and simple song from the given "lyrics". I upload it and anyone who wants can sing or play along (kind of like with Mr. Norman, but less elaborate...)
3. We do something completely different.

I'm not really happy with either option. Taking the original sound is not as creative and surprising as we can get, and recording a complete new version leaves so very little of Ze in there. What do you think?

that way we can keep the music simple but everyone can have a word?

I like the idea of people saying the words. I mean, everybody's picking a phrase anyways, can't they just record themselves saying it out as well? Even if it's just on their computers' webcams...

We could then show the drawn pictures, add the talking faces in a small window and play some music for the back.

Or we do the recording thing with music: I record a simple enough song, and everyone films him-/herself singing their line. We can then take out my first recording and have everyone just sing instead of talk...

You are right that the words are what makes Ze's videos so very special. Although in that case, I probably would not have picked the "invocations" one... :o)

Yeah, let's go with words! For two reasons:

1. More people can participate.

2. It's easier to make kind of a song from it.

One condition: I would love to have the recordings by Tuesday evening, since I'm on a camping trip starting on Thursday, and that would give me just Wednesday to make a song out of them... To not overflow anyone's Mailbox, what do you think of the following: Go to mydrive and login with username "zefrank@flohs-daten" and password "invocations" and you can upload stuff. Maybe name it appropriately for an easier sorting? A 3-digit-number at the beginning to identify the word would be perfect...

100 parts would be fine, too. I would rather go with seperate word though. Maybe people can pick more than one word? You can easily do that on doodle...

I personally would have no problem recording me saying 20 seperate words... just in case too few people would participate. I have yet to find out how many active users there are on this forum...

I selected the audio clips for the same section I did the pic for. I hope that's ok; it just seemed easier to match timbre with a phrase versus one word. If there's an abundance of participants, I can uncheck a few words and re-record.

Can I still participate in this? The doodlebug website keeps crashing my iPad browser, but if I can still take a pic of an invocation phrase about not being able to take credit for how my actions are perceived?
