Finishing Book: Chicago/ North Midwest Region
  • Hey all! I noticed that the Chicago region doesn't have a discussion thread going yet, and feel like we're lacking in planning. Although that is quite possibly just me being a slight control freak. :) So here we go! Anybody willing/able to get the book from the Ohio/Toronto (reasonable assumption is that it will be traveling through Indiana)? Any takers to get it to Kansas City?
  • Also: Am I right in assuming that our region also includes Wisconsin/Minnesota/North Dakota? If so, any ideas on how we can get the book up that way? I will be going up to Minnesota on the 24th, but it looks like that is outside of the dates when we are going to be in possession of the book. :(
  • I live in Indiana! What do you need from moi?
  • BUMP BUMP BUMP
  • I live near Cleveland and am going to chicago for a few days on the 9th, which i assume is too soon, but throwing it out there
  • @valerie2776 ... You need to get in touch with people in your area and the folks coordinating the book's journey out of the Northeast...  Your area is up next!

The projected order of path of the book currently is:

    NYC Aug 1
    Albany
    Boston Aug 6
    Toronto
    Cleveland Aug 8ish
    (THIS IS YOU!  WHAT TIMING!!!)
    Chicago Aug 10
    Minneapolis
    Tennessee
    Virginia
    Washington DC
    The Carolinas
    GA/FL/AL
    LA/MS
    Texas
    Kansas City
    Denver
  • @CherishP I am totally swamped with work and preparations for trip taking from now until I leave so sadly i can't really do much with the organizing of stuff BUT if someone is bringing the book to cleveland before the 9th (my bus leaves from cle at like 8am on the 9th, so), i can get it and take it to chicago.

i'll be going there for leakycon which is a harry potter thing that has a ton of overlap with the nerdfighter community which has a ton of overlap with the zefrank community so i think there should be quite a few people there who could stamp the book as well.

and then when i'm there i'll be staying at the hilton chicago and won't have any mode of transportation but will be there until the night of the 12th so am sure someone could pick it up in that window of time?

ok that turned into general info for anyone in the area but there you go!

will be trying to look at the boards as much as possible but if somethin's super important/urgent, twitter is @valerie2776 and email is the same username @gmail
  • Oh, I didn't mean to imply you do the organizing... just to let the folks in your region know about the gift of the timing of your travel to Chicago and leaky con!  =)

  • @valerie2776 I'm in Columbus, I will see if I can get it to you on the 8th or 9th to take with you to leakycon - so jealous, btw - I need to find out who I'm picking it up from & to see how many Ohioans we can get it to in such a short amount of time.
  • @valerie2776 That's so wonderful! I'm up for some sort of gathering in/near Chicago this weekend... for me, anytime Thursday, Saturday evening or Sunday afternoon/evening would be the best. Or I could just pick it up + arrange another meet-up if it turns out that works better for most people in this region. Anyone else in the area have any thoughts???
  • As far as getting it up to Minnesota - I can probably only go as far as Milwaukee or so... not much time, and not much gas money :(  So hopefully *fingers crossed* somebody else can get it farther north. Other than that, assuming we don't ship it, if the book is able to get back this way before the 24th, that is when I will be leaving to go to MN + could gladly take it with me.
  • So am I in charge of picking it up from whoever is taking it from Ohio? Because if it's dropped off in Indiana, I can take it to @plasticchopstic , who can then take it to Chicago if I remember her offering in the main thread...
  • So @CherishP in all her glory just posted a map of the current route, so it looks like we're passing through Ohio twice.
    MAP
And Chicago is kind of the main hub for the book in our region. So what's the plan now? I'm still up for passing it off on the trip to G from central Indiana
  • @GrossToast - Valerie2776 is taking the book from Ohio to Chicago when she goes to LeakyCon. Can you be in charge of getting it *back* to Ohio from Indiana?

Oops... just re-read your post and saw that you already offered to do that haha. So there's a plan! :)
  • Hey, Dan here from the SE Region forum. How do you propose we get the book from Chi-town to our neck of the woods?
  • I live in Chicago. I am not going anywhere, so I won't be any help getting it delivered to the next location, but I would like to add to the book when it gets here. Please keep me posted... pmsg@me.com
  • How far into Ohio are we talking?
  • @Grosstoast I am in Dayton Ohio. I could meet somewhere between Dayton and where your coming from for the hand off.
  • I live down in Cincy and while I know we won't have the book long, I'd love to have a chance to sign and stamp. I think since the book looks to be in Ohio for such a short period, maybe a SR meet-up is order. Suggestions on a city/place, anyone?
  • Dan - According to @CherishP's map, Ohio will get the book again before it goes down to the SE region. Ohio's contact is @sethpaxton.

    @Cardzmaster2004 - Ohio's contact is @sethpaxton. (I feel like a parrot :) )

As far as organizing how we will all get the book once it actually hits Chicago... as I was thinking about it today, I thought probably the easiest way for all of us to sign it would be to meet at the hotel where LeakyCon is and just write in it there. I think that ideally, it would be super-cool if we could all be there together to write in it, but I totally understand if people have different schedules that make that difficult.

Anybody have any thoughts/opinions on when we could meet up? Or another suggestion altogether?
  • Yeah, Running it straight down the coast is a great way to skip the interior.  Zig Zagging across the middle states at least once seemed to be the best way to wave the book in front of the most people.  And since it went north of NYC first, sending it across the top to Chicago from there minimized a bit of back tracking.
  • @grosstoast are you the one bringing it to/through Ohio? Where are you planning? (Columbus, checking in)
  • Hi all, Detroit here... I'm actually leaving on the 9th to head Erie PA for the weekend, planning on taking route 80/90 through Ohio.  @sethpaxton and @valerie2776, I can meet either of you anywhere along that route any time on Thursday the 9th, would that work?

I'm also driving back from Erie PA to Detroit via 80/90 on Sunday the 12th if that's helpful at all?
  • @MaryKateOlsen I will be spamming the forums when it gets close, still looking for when it's coming around my part of the state; I'm seeing some maps that say that the book will be going Cleveland Oh -> Chicago, IL -> Indianapolis, IN -> Columbus, Oh -> Pittsburgh, PA but I'm not sure about the timeline for that. @CherishP can you confirm that schedule?
  • @sethpaxton PM me your plans as far as getting the book outside of Ohio, so we can set something up for the southern states.
  • Looks like the book is heading back east to boston from Rochester today... So... I think it's fairly safe to say it has missed the bus to Chicago and won't be at leakycon.
  • @swburdine Okay, so let's meet where all true champions meet: the parking lot of a Quality Inn in Richmond, Indiana!
Quality Inn, 5501 National Road East, Richmond, IN 47374

Okay, so if you go on google maps, and make your trip
    A = 7471 Windridge Way, Brownsburg, IN 46112
B = Quality Inn, 5501 National Road East, Richmond, IN 47374
every who lives near that route needs to notify me immediately!
  • Just to clarify, that Richmond is Richmond INDIANA. I just reread my post like 5 times, and each time the IN looked like a VA to me. I have no clue why.
  • @GrossToast sounds great I will add it to my places in Google Maps.  PM me when you are ready to meet up in Richmond.

@sethpaxton and others on the Ohio leg we can figure out the route the book needs to take.
  • Ok, Chicago SRs!!! Here is the REVISED plan for getting the book to us!

After passing through Boston and more of the east coast-ish area, it will be flying with @Ailuj's brother into Chicago on Monday night. I am planning on picking it up from him either Monday or Tuesday, depending on how my work schedule ends up for next week, and then getting it distributed around our area at some point soon after that.

I'm thinking that it would be best if we just have it at some easily identifiable location where everybody can easily get to. At this point my thought is that I will just hang out at the Bean for an afternoon or something... everybody knows where the Bean is! :-)

HERE'S WHAT I NEED FROM YOU:

    - WHETHER the Bean will work for you as an easy-to-get-to location... if not, where would you suggest?
    - WHEN (what day(s), time of day, etc.) is easiest for you to get to the Bean (or whatever the location ends up being)
    - CONFIRM (either a Chicago or Indiana person) how it is going to get to @GrossToast or whoever it goes to next.

    You guys rock!!!
  • Coming late to the party. Will the book be in Chicago and if so, when? Is there still a possibility of it making a swing up to Minneapolis?
  • Okay, so here's how I understand the book's presumed path:
    Boston (now, 8/9)  @Ailuj 's brother
    Chicago (Monday, 8/13) @Bass777chick
    Indianapolis ( Tuesday or Wednesday, 8/14 or 8/15) @GrossToast
Dayton/Columbus (Thusday or Friday, 8/16 or 8/17) @swburdine and myself
Richmond VA (Saturday, maybe? 8/18) @CarbonandSpace

If this is everyone else's plan for it's path then confirm the date, if there are any discrepancies then please let me know!
  • I'm up in the Madison WI area -- anybody know if the book is coming this way any time, or would I need to drive down to Chicago?
  • @GrossToast : WHEN will the meet-up in Richmond be? I  know you're shooting for Tues/Wed of next week, but the day determines whether or not I'll be able to sign the book. GenCon starts that Thursday, so I won't be able to hit the Ohio leg at all right now and I'd love to be involved in this project if possible...
  • There's a youtube meetup for Indianapolis on August 14th at the art park at the IMA. I know there'll be at least 3 people there with stamps.
  • This is a play-by-ear kind of  situation, so I'm really just hoping the scheduled days are the actual days I have the book. @Cardzmaster2004 and @gtempletonk I have written your requests down in hopes that I don't forget them! I will keep you updated

If it doesn't swing up to Minneapolis with the Chicago group... I can overnight it to you from Kansas City (because as of yet, no Nebraskans or Iowans have claimed it after Kansas City). But then you will have to get it to Denver.

  • I posted in the "60 days. . ." thread, but I'm also in Minneapolis and would love to get the book here.  I could share in the postage to get it to Denver - certainly, I could swing it all on my own if we did it priority (2day) instead of overnight.  Does that help?

    Sounds great.

We're in sit tight mode in my region... If it misses you in Chicago, when it gets to Texas, I can get you more info.

  • @Bass777chick there is a possibility of a person to person hand off. I will msg you details as they are available.

@cherishp that would be splendid! If the hand off from Chicago doesn't work out I will take you up on your offer.
  • @Bass777chick, @cherishp, @sethpaxton, Okay, so I just saw Seth's post about the schedule, so if that's still a go, it looks like this won't work and we'll go with the getting it mailed from Texas and then mailing it to Denver plan. But just in case the schedule has come unstuck, here's another option. . .  I
could conceivably drive to Madison on Weds or Thursday. (The 14th/15th of August) Thursday is
easier for me, but I also want to help keep this moving.  Is there
anyone in the Chicago area willing to bring the book to Madison? I know
of one person in Madison who was looking to get in on the action - maybe
they would fetch it from Chicago?  From here, I think it will have to
be mailed - but that means it can really go anywhere in the
    US.Thoughts?
  • Mailed From KC.  KC gets it from Texas... but otherwise yes.

Contingency planning is always much appreciated.  Thanks!

  • Hey SRs - the long story short of this is we are about to embark on a one week road trip through 11 states (VA, NC, SC, GA, FL, TN, KY, IL, IN, OH, WV) and would absolutely be down for taking the book and holding meetups all along the way.  The overall plan would look something like this:

    - Between now and the 16th the book would make its trip to Chicago, maybe to those in Wisconsin and/or Michigan, and potentially through Pennsylvania down to DC (@righthandscrew?)

    - The book would need to get from DC to Richmond and have its meeting in Richmond, VA on the 17th (@Sara4?)

From there, we could take it on a rapid-fire tour of the Southeast, back up to the Midwest, and then mail it to wherever it should go next.  During the tour we (there are two of us) would keep updates coming from the road via Twitter, letting everyone know of the book's progress on the go, and stopping for meetups every few hours in locations selected based on interest.  We would be doing this in three legs, and they'd look something like this:

LEG 1: Richmond, VA to Lakeland, FL (between midday on the 18th and end of day on the 19th)
We'd pass within a reasonable driving distance of the following cities (most of the meetings for this leg would need to be off I-95):

    - Raleigh, NC
    - Fayetteville, NC
    - Columbia, SC
    - Charleston, SC
    - Savannah, GA
    - Jacksonville, FL
    - Daytona Beach, FL
    - Orlando, FL
    - Tampa, FL

    @carbonandspace, @duskcheetah, @periahdark - what do you think?

LEG 2: Lakeland, FL to Decatur, IL (from the morning of the 21st to the afternoon of the 22nd - rapid-fire!)
    Potential participating cities:

    - Gainesville, FL
    - Atlanta, GA
    - Chattanooga, TN
    - Nashville, TN
    - St. Louis, MO

    @myemmie, @nickyjo, @connorcarr - what say you?

LEG 3: Decatur, IL to Richmond, VA (from the morning of the 23rd to midday on the 24th)
    We could see SRs from:

    - Indianapolis, IN
    - Dayton, OH
    - Columbus, OH
    - Cincinnati, OH
    - Charleston, WV
    - Charlottesville, VA

@sethpaxton, @GrossToast - I realize this contradicts/repeats plans tentatively coming together as noted above in this thread - what do you think about changing it around for a meetup in Dayton for all Ohio people on the 23rd?

And then upon our return to Richmond on the 24th we'd mail the book to wherever it needs to be next.

Two bonuses could come of such a process:

    1. If we're taking the book on a tour of locations this will give all the forum Southeast and Midwest SRs more time to focus on getting more people involved and at the meetups, as opposed to spending most of the time figuring out book-passing logistics through these states.

    2. We also do film work - so we could capture the journey on camera and put together a short documentary starring the SRs who write in the book along the way and give it to Ze to consider for his museum or to watch while eating breakfast or something.

This is also posted in the Southeast and main book threads. We don't know if the idea of two SRs taking the book on a one-week, 11-state tour is appealing to the group at large - and are very curious to hear your thoughts!

  • @theAVAdventure  (mostly repost from the Southeast thread) I totally support the idea of the road trip, but it's
definitely not going to mesh with the plan of swinging it through
Columbus, Pittsburgh, Philly and DC (My PIT-PHI trip is on the 18th, the
same day you're leaving). However, I notice that your trip is hitting a
lot of the same places as the Chicago-Columbus route, so potentially
you could get it overnighted directly from Chicago before you head out
-- that might give it time to wander up to Madison or Minneapolis as
some others here have requested. Alternatively it could be shipped to Baltimore/DC on, say, the 15th as there are a few interested sportsracers in that area.

@zxo - The overnight from Chicago to DC/Baltimore (following a small tour north) could work really nicely - and then @righthandscrew could coordinate a DC meet and get the book to us in Richmond, VA.

Will you be back in Pitt on the 23rd?  How had you originally planned on getting the book from Columbus? Another option that might keep everyone involved (because it certainly could be tough to manage a cross-PA handoff this week) could be Chicago (with a minor tour north to WI, MN) --> overnight to DC, delivery to Richmond, VA --> road trip through VA, NC, SC, GA, FL, TN, KY, IL, IN, to Ohio --> we leave the book with whoever you were going arrange pick-up with in Columbus - perhaps @sethpaxton? - (or we do Dayton and Columbus/Cincinnati people drive in - whichever) --> you take it to Pitt, and get anyone you can in that area, then overnight it to Texas for the next part of the country to pass around.

With this trip the book would cover about 2,300 miles on the road in the ten days following touch-down in Chicago, maximizing time for others - there's obviously a long way to go...

    Thoughts?
  • The plan would have been to meet @sethpaxton halfway on the 17th.

I will be back in Pittsburgh on the 23rd, but not until night. If you want to leave it with a Columbian who I can pick it up from on the 24th - 26th, that's fine. On the other hand, I haven't seen any other PGH duckies posting here, so it would be a few days delay for pretty much for my benefit only. Though it would be nice to add my stamp to the book, I wouldn't be too torn up if it skips me.
  • This definitely simplifies my workload, and I could easily just join the sportsracers that are already having the meetup at the IMA. I'm on board, as long as it doesn't critically impact or compromise the plans of my other fellow Hoosiers @plasticchopstic @gtempletonk @cardzmaster2004 and @DLordCletus (These are the ones that I can recall mentioning wanting to sign it in Indiana at some given point. If your name isn't on this list, or you don't want it to be on there, shoot me a pm)
  • Hey! Fellow Minnesotan here! I live 20 mins outside Minneapolis! If I can be of any help in passing it along, I'd love to be a link in the chain!
  • @theAVAdventure your plan is concise and the idea of videoing the trip is great. How much flexibility do you have in your plan to give SR's time to meet up with you in each region? I am guessing you will coordinate with each regional contact. To make sure as many SR's have an opportunity to sign the book as possible.

Howdy, Stranger!
