Santa Cruz
  • Who all's going?!
  • So far, I am planning on it, and most likely bringing my wife and daughter.
  • I am perilously close to buying a plane ticket - seems like too much fun to pass up!
  • what's the name of the museum? Where is it located?
  • I'm going. I just need to map out how I'm going to hobo my way to the location. ^_^
  • Wow, the directions are pretty simple actually.
  • Just booked my flight! See y'all in Santa Cruz.
  • Booked my flight. See you all soon!
  • Road trip in the works.

  • I'm going, but I'm lucky enough to be a local. And I'm lucky enough to have been able to move a meeting off by a day so I'm not flying during the fun weekend.
  • I'm going too!
  • Would anyone be interested in a ride share?  My partner and I live in the Eastbay/Oakland area.  We do not have a street legal car, but would love to see the art and meet other lovely internet folk.  We would be glad to pay for some gas, and provide conversation and pumpkin muffins to anyone who is going and wouldn't mind us tagging along! Either day would be great for us!  :)
  • I wondering who's going on each day. I think me and my friends are probably going to end up doing Sunday because we've got to see the 49er playoff game, but if a bunch of people from the forum are going on Saturday we may have to reconsider.
  • @lindyloo I flew in to SFO tonight. I may be renting a car to get to Santa Cruz or taking the train. I'll know more tomorrow morning.
  • My wife and daughter are joining me for the day, which I'm excited about. We're heading out the door in a few moments to drive down to Santa Cruz, and will only be staying for the Saturday portion of the weekend.

See y'all there who's gonna be there.

  • Looking forward to meeting you @dvwhat
  • Meeeee! Imma be there today! So excited! If i can find it...
  • Wish there were a live streaming feed, darnit!
  • Ze is taller in real life.

    Hope ya know.
  • What a wonderful day it has been. And I was thrilled to be able to meet all the Sportsracers I saw today. Sorry I'm not able to be there for day 2, but I hope you all enjoy a wonderful time.
  • First post to a forum ever. Despite having to leave early, the museum was incredible. And yeah, Ze is really tall in real life.
  • I had a BLAST meeting so many people at the museum today. I can't wait to meet and see more of you for day 2. @DVWhat it was a pleasure, you have a beautiful family. @Awesome.nadroJ I am so happy I got to meet and spend some time with you, even if you had to leave early.

  • It was exciting to meet a few of you today as we all got to meet Ze...it was the perfect melting pot of community, creativity and awkwardness that I was hoping for.  ^_^  I wish I had had the chance to meet more of you in person there but I hope to contribute here a little more.  Enjoy Sunday to those who are going :D
  • Ok, so he's tall. The real question is does he truly have large pectorals?

Seriously, is someone going to do a bit of a run-down for those of us who couldn't be there this weekend? Pictures, maybe? Video? Really long, detailed description so we can live vicariously through your exploits? We're on the edge of our seats here!
  • I plan on doing just that @poetjv after tomorrow. I think it would be great to start a thread and have everyone load pics and tell stories. It might take a few days for people to settle back home and start telling some stories, but I hope we won't keep you waiting for too long.
  • Yay! I'll be looking forward to it @MalteseFalcon!
  • I wonder how many people built this weekend up to be all about Ze, who has built up this weekend to be all about us?

    :P
  • @CherishP Right? As much as I'm interested in hearing about last night's presentation and reception, I'm truthfully more interested in hearing about what the community-created projects like the face wall look like in person, as well as all the crafting and workshops and "hijinks," as the museum puts it on their site. What a treat to get to see and experience all that in person - you guys are lucky!
  • The only reason I didn't go, is because my chickens need access to water that isn't frozen, and their eggs shouldn't be allowed to freeze either.  If this wasn't in January and I didn't have to worry about the sub freezing temps here in KC, their feeder and waterer are easily big enough to last for 3 days... so I would have totally been there... if only to hug AwedJob.

I gave @AwedJob a big hug for you.

  • I hope something like this happens again. It was really fun, but I had a hard time transitioning from online community participation to real life community participation. Also, I'm ridiculously awkward. (I told Ze he was the "cat's pajamas" not once, but twice. WHY DOST THOU LACK THE ABILITY TO NOT BE A COMPLETE WEIRDO, BRAIN?!)
  • @raven that is the best thing ever, your brain is fantastic! :)
  • I'm representing the much smaller Sunday crew. It seems like there was ALOT of people on Saturday and I'm disappointed I didn't get to meet a lot of you guys from the forum, maybe next time. Regardless I had a great time and it felt more personal and relaxed with so few people.
  • Hey everyone! I had the pleasure of attending the museum event this weekend. Drove up from southern CA and it was totally worth it. Such fun! I took a ton of photos if anyone is interested in getting a glimpse of everything that happened:

It'll take a few days to process all of the awesomeness that happened the last two days. Haha.

  • Thank you for posting your flickr set.  It looks like it was a lot of fun...

...and...even though he looks to have taken a spill at some point, it was nice to see that Mr. Puddles was included.  In a small way, that makes me feel as though I got to go after all. =)
  • @genevieve What a great eye you have. Fantastic pictures. You captured what I experienced; beautiful storytelling with pictures. Thanks for sharing.

I too am trying to figure out what just happened.
  • It was an extreme pleasure to have all of you here at the MAH. I walked in this morning at 7:30am to a closed museum with a gaggle of decorated duckies greeting me. Thank you for participating and for being such an awesome, generous, inspiring community.

    Nina (museum director)
  • Thank you Geneveve for taking those great pictures.  The memories from this weekend I will cherish for a long time.  I'm new to the online community here, but am looking forward to participating more.  Everyone I met was so awesome!

    Hugs to both of you.

After this weekend I have a bit of an emotional hangover. The after party was such a high energy event. My paligula is worn out.

  • Holy heck, that looks like it was an awesome time - lucky duckies!

@Genevieve - those are great pictures. Thanks so much for sharing! What was going on with the blindfold game and in the shot where a bunch of people are lying on the floor?

@MalteseFalcon - your crafts(wo)manship is amazing! I have loved that comfort bear since its video feature, and now it's even more special knowing who made it.
  • Great meeting so many of you. @ninaksimon, many thanks for putting on such an amazing show and making us out-of-towners feel so welcome.

Here is a little homage to the weekend's instigators and tribute to the event.  I call him the Santa Cruz MAHnster.

  • @poetjv For the blindfold game people had to guide the blind person through a maze, drawn on the ground in chalk, by ringing when they got close to the lines. It was fun and a great way to make a fool out of yourself and friends. I have no idea what was going on where people are lying down. I wasn't there that day, but if that kind of shenanigans were going on, I wish even more that I was.
  • @poetjv the pic of people lying on the floor is a laugh circle. One person lays down, another person lays with their head on the first's stomach. And so on. Then one person laughs. That is all it takes to set every other person in the circle laughing. It continues until the circle is broken, tears streaming down faces, running to the bathroom so the don't pee their pants.
  • Thanks, y'all - I am totally snagging those shenanigans...I mean, ideas...to use with my students and tutors. What fun!
  • Hallo all - a pleasure to meet many of you there (Toks & I were the two crazies that came from London - facilitated stamp making & started the laughing circles). Had a great time & will post some pics soon.

We are making our way north now to Vancouver & would love to meet sports racers on the way so have started a thread that you can post in if you are anywhere between Santa Cruz & Canada !

    Thanks all, Sarah
  • @Yayira are you staying with Julie from the museum? She was fantastic, the little I got to see her.

Also is she the one with the rubber ducky necklaces? I fell in love with them at the museum, but didn't have the funds to buy one then. I hope to track one down once I am back home and get another paycheck or two.

Howdy, Stranger!
